Craig New mark began the service in 1995 as an email distribution list to friends, featuring local events in the
San Francisco Bay Area. It became a web-based service in 1996 and expanded into other classified categories. From e-commerce websites to furniture wholesalers, small businesses both online and off are realizing the marketing power of Craigslist. Craigslist has 15 million pages views per day.
It started expanding to other U.S. cities in 2000, and now covers 70 countries. With an online classified ads format organized by either region or city, Craigslist connects buyers and sellers in more than 300 communities; for the most part, posting on the site is free.
